Many people go to bed later than the Sun sets, which can negatively affect both physical and mental health. Scientists suggest that sleeping outdoors may improve sleep by helping our body clock, known as the circadian rhythm, stay in sync with natural light and darkness.
Researchers studied this idea by taking a group of people on a week-long camping trip in the Rocky Mountains. During this time, they did not use phones or artificial light. Instead, they were exposed to much more natural daylight than usual and experienced the natural cycle of day and night.
The participants’ melatonin levels were measured before and after the trip. Melatonin is a hormone that helps control when we feel sleepy. The results showed that after camping, their circadian rhythms shifted about two hours earlier. This meant they felt tired earlier in the evening and more awake in the morning.
The study also found that when people sleep at home, artificial light can confuse the body. Melatonin levels may stay high even after waking up, which can make people feel tired in the morning. However, after spending time outdoors, melatonin levels dropped earlier, helping participants feel more alert after waking.
Although more research is needed, these findings suggest that reducing artificial light and spending time outdoors could improve sleep quality and overall well-being.
Even without camping, people can make small changes. For example, using bright light during the day and softer, warmer light in the evening can help the body follow a more natural rhythm.
