How Did People Wake Up Before Alarm Clocks?
Before alarm clocks, people used many clever ways to wake up on time. In the past, daily life often followed the sun. People went to bed after sunset and woke up at sunrise. This natural rhythm helped them start their day.
Animals also helped. For example, a rooster crowing in the morning was a typical signal to wake up. In many places, church bells were important too. They rang every hour and helped people know the time.
During the Industrial Revolution* in Britain, people needed to wake up at exact times for factory work. Being even a few minutes late could cause problems. However, alarm clocks were too expensive for most workers.
So, a special job appeared: the “knocker upper.” These people walked through the streets early in the morning. They knocked on windows with sticks or even shot small peas at them. They waited until the person woke up and answered.
There were also other creative methods. Some people used candle clocks. These candles burned slowly and dropped small metal pieces at certain times to make noise.
The first mechanical alarm clock was invented in 1787, but they became more common after 1876. Still, they were not cheap at first. By the early 20th century, alarm clocks became more affordable, and the job of knocker uppers slowly disappeared.
Today, we use alarm clocks and phones, but in the past, people used nature, animals, and even other people to wake up.
