Summer Myths: Are They True?

Summer is a wonderful season, but many people believe things that are not always true. Let’s look at some common summer myths.

Many people think that you should drink exactly eight glasses of water every day. In reality, people need different amounts of water. If you eat fruit and vegetables or drink other healthy drinks, they also help keep you hydrated.

Another popular myth is that you can get sunburned only on sunny days. This is not true. Ultraviolet (UV) rays can pass through clouds, so people can get sunburned even when the sky is grey.

Some people believe that ice cream makes you feel cooler on a hot day. It may feel refreshing for a short time, but your body must use energy to digest it, which can actually make you feel warmer afterwards.

There is also a myth that mosquitoes prefer sweet blood. Scientists have found no evidence for this. Mosquitoes are more interested in body heat, carbon dioxide and certain body chemicals.

Finally, many people think that you should wait one hour after eating before swimming. While swimming immediately after a large meal may feel uncomfortable, there is little evidence that it is dangerous for healthy people.

So next time you hear a summer „fact”, stop and ask yourself: is it really true?
