Practical Tips for Learning New Vocabulary

Learning new words is an important part of learning a language. However, it can sometimes be difficult to remember many new words. Here are some simple tips that can help you learn vocabulary more easily.

1. Learn a few words every day

You do not need to learn 30 new words in one day. It is better to learn five or six words and practise them regularly. For example, you can learn five new words every morning. At the end of the week, you will know many more words.

2. Use new words in sentences

When you learn a new word, do not only read its meaning. Write a simple sentence with it. For example, if you learn the word expensive, you can write: “This restaurant is very expensive.” Using a word in a sentence helps you remember how to use it.

3. Make word cards

Word cards are a useful way to practise vocabulary. Write the new word on one side of a card and its meaning or a picture on the other side. You can carry the cards with you and practise when you are on the bus, waiting for a friend, or having a short break.

4. Group words together

Try to learn words in groups. For example, when you study food, you can learn bread, cheese, vegetable, fruit, and meat together. It is often easier to remember words when they are connected to the same topic.

5. Review old words

Do not forget old vocabulary when you learn new words. Spend a few minutes each day reviewing words you learned last week. You may forget a word if you do not use it for a long time.

Finally, be patient. Learning vocabulary takes time. You do not have to remember every word immediately. Practise a little every day, use your new words, and you will slowly build a much bigger vocabulary.
