Let’s speak about the past

Used to, would and simple past

We can use ‘used to’, ‘would’ and simple past structures to speak about things that happened in the past but don’t happen anymore.

What is the difference?

Use ‘used to‘, ‘would’ or past simple to talk about repeated actions or events. ‘Used to’ or ‘would’ always have the extra meaning: but not anymore.

Use ‘used to‘ or simple past to talk about past states (for example things you liked, had, where you were etc.)

Use simple past for single events.

E.g.:

We used to be good friends. = We were good friends.

Once we visited a safari park.
