Cycling around the world
John Lavington lives in Richmond in the north of England, but he cycles all around the world. Last year he rode his bike 5,000 miles around the USA. He tells us why he loves cycling.
Why did you start cycling?
I started cycling in 2007 because I got a new job and started cycling to work. My office was far from my house and the bus wasn’t cheap so I decided to ride my bike. At first it wasn’t easy because I didn’t do a lot of exercise and I was quite slow. But I started cycling at the weekend, too. Then, one summer I took my bike on a holiday any cycled from the north to the south of France. It was a really good holiday and I loved cycling in the country.
Why do you like riding a bike?
I love travelling and visiting new places. You can go to places by bike that you can’t visit by car, bus or train. It’s a cheap, clean and healthy type of transport. It’s also quick. My cycle to work takes 15 minutes and the bus takes 30. I can sleep for an extra 15 minutes each morning!
How often do you cycle?
Of course, every day! I go to work by bike every weekday and I go on trips at the weekends to cycle around Richmond. In the summer I often visit other countries with my friends and we cycle to new places together.
What don’t you like about riding a bike?
Nothing! I love everything about it.
